The Bells of Awakening

Two ancient chimes that unlock the path to Anor Londo and destiny.

The Bells of Awakening are two colossal bronze chimes suspended within Firelink Shrine in the kingdom of Lordran. They serve as the primary mechanical progression markers for the Chosen Undead, signaling readiness to advance toward Anor Londo and the final confrontation with Gwyn. These ancient instruments were dormant for ages until the arrival of the Undead. Ringing them is not merely a task but a ritualistic step required to unlock sealed gates, summon essential NPCs, and alter the state of the world around the player.

Lore & Background

The bells were placed in Firelink Shrine by the architects of Lordran, intended to be rung only when a worthy vessel emerged from the Undead Asylum. They act as a signal across the land that the Age of Fire is being challenged or upheld. Without their resonance, the great seals on Sen's Fortress remain impenetrable. Kingseekers Frampt and Darkstalker Kaathe both utilize the ringing of these bells to gauge the Chosen Undead's progress. For Frampt, it is a sign that the Lord of Sunlight can be reached; for Kaathe, it marks the beginning of the path to usurp the fire. The sound itself carries weight, shaking the foundations of the shrine and waking those who sleep in the dark. Ultimately, these bells represent the transition from wandering hollows to purposeful knights. They bridge the gap between the early game struggles in the Burg and the high fantasy politics of Anor Londo.

In Their Own Story

The chain groaned under cold iron fingers. As the clapper struck, a deep resonance vibrated through the stone floor of Firelink Shrine. Shadows seemed to recoil from the sound, echoing across the hollowed kingdom of Lordran. Somewhere far away, a gate clicked open, and an ancient watcher stirred in his sleep.

Reader's Guide

To ring the First Bell, players must navigate the treacherous Undead Burg and defeat the massive Bell Gargoyle guarding the chain. This unlocks the gate to the Parish and changes Solaire's dialogue at Firelink Shrine, showing his pride in your progress. The Second Bell requires journeying through Blighttown to Quelaag's Domain deep underground. After slaying the Spider Queen, the Undead returns to ring this chime alongside the first. These actions are mandatory for main story progression. They open the path to Sen's Fortress, allowing access to Anor Londo later in the game. Additionally, ringing both bells summons the Giant Blacksmith near the shrine, who can upgrade weapons beyond standard limits using Titanite Slabs. Ignoring these objectives halts advancement significantly within the kingdom of Lordran. NPCs react differently based on progress. Frampt will urge haste once the second bell rings, while Kaathe offers a darker perspective on the same event regarding humanity. The sound of the bells echoes through the kingdom, signaling that the Undead is no longer lost but moving toward their ultimate fate.
