The Four Kings

Noble guardians corrupted by the Abyss, they drowned their city in darkness and became its masters.

The Four Kings were once noble rulers of New Londo, a city built upon the ruins of an ancient capital and blessed by the Great Lord Gwyn. They were entrusted with the sealing of the Abyss beneath their city, a task they performed faithfully for generations until the corruption of the Dark took hold. Their fall marks one of the most tragic events in the history of Lordran, transforming a beacon of civilization into a flooded necropolis teeming with undead and abyssal horrors.

Lore & Background

Centuries ago, the Four Kings were chosen to guard the seal over the Abyss that lay beneath New Londo. For a long time, they held back the encroaching darkness, maintaining order in the city above. However, the weight of their duty eventually succumbed to the temptation of the Dark within them. In a moment of madness or despair, they broke their own seal, allowing the Abyss to flood the streets and consume their people. The corruption spread so rapidly that it turned the entire population into mindless, shadowy thralls.

In Their Own Story

The water in New Londo is not merely wet; it is heavy with the weight of forgotten sins. As you wade through the flooded ruins, the silence is broken only by the gurgling of shadows rising from the depths. You see them now—the Four Kings—not as men, but as towering pillars of writhing darkness and bone, their forms shifting like smoke in a gale. They do not speak, for their voices were stolen by the Abyss long ago; they only hunger. The crystal coffin that once held them lies shattered, its shards glowing faintly against the gloom, a testament to a seal broken by those who were sworn to keep it.

Reader's Guide

The Four Kings are encountered deep within the New Londo Ruins, a zone accessible after lowering the water level using the Quelaag's Waterfall key or similar progression. They appear as four distinct bosses fused together in a single, massive entity of dark energy and skeletal remains. To defeat them, players must avoid their sweeping attacks and the abyssal projectiles they launch from their hands. The fight is less about out-maneuvering individual limbs and more about surviving the overwhelming pressure of the darkness they emit. Their health bar represents the collective strength of all four rulers combined. Upon their defeat, the seal on the Abyss is temporarily reinforced, allowing the player to retrieve the Lordvessel fragment or proceed with the main questline. This victory does not restore the city; New Londo remains a drowned graveyard, a permanent reminder of what happens when the Dark is left unchecked.
