Centuries later, as the flame fades once more, Gwyn remains in the Kiln, waiting for someone to take his place. He is no longer the vibrant king of Anor Londo but a hollowed remnant driven by duty and desperation. His sons, including the dragon-slayer Knight Artorias and the beast Sif, have met their fates before him, leaving Gwyn as the last line of defense. The defeat of Gwyn signifies the breaking of his will to sustain the fire alone. Whether he is killed or replaced, his death marks the end of an era. The souls within him are vast, representing the accumulated power of the first age, making his defeat one of the most significant moments in the history of the world.

Lightning crackled around the Lord's blade one last time, a final defiance against the encroaching dark, before silence reclaimed the chamber.

Reader's Guide

The journey concludes at the Kiln of the First Flame, reached after ringing both Bells of Awakening and traversing the deepest reaches of the world. Upon entering the chamber, the player confronts Gwyn alone amidst the dying embers of the primordial fire. This encounter differs from previous battles as there are no minions or environmental hazards to complicate the duel, focusing purely on combat mechanics against a lightning-wielding knight. Gwyn defends his position with swift strikes and powerful lightning attacks that reflect the fading power of the Age of Fire. He is determined to protect the flame he sacrificed himself to sustain centuries prior. The fight tests the player's endurance and mastery of dodging, as Gwyn’s aggression increases when his health depletes significantly. Upon victory, a choice defines the game's ending. The Chosen Undead may link the fire using their accumulated souls, perpetuating the Age of Fire at great personal cost.
