Dwarfs

Masters of the dark forge, crafting weapons from the abyssal depths.

The Dwarfs of Dark Souls are a reclusive and diminutive race renowned for their unparalleled mastery of metallurgy and mining. Unlike other races that seek to link the First Flame or serve the gods, Dwarfs dwell deep within the earth, specifically in the ancient mines beneath Oolacile Township and beyond. They possess a unique affinity for the dark sun, allowing them to craft weapons imbued with the power of Dark Sorcery, a feat impossible for other smiths.

Lore & Background

Their existence was cut short by the invasion of the Darkwraiths and the subsequent fall of Oolacile. As the city succumbed to the Abyss, the Dwarfs were either slaughtered or forced into hiding, their knowledge nearly lost to time. The only remnants of their civilization are the scattered weapons they left behind and the few who managed to flee to the surface, such as the mysterious dwarf encountered in the Undead Asylum or the one found in Darkroot Garden. Their legacy is a testament to the power hidden within the darkness that Gwyn sought to banish.

In Their Own Story

The air in the mine was thick with the scent of sulfur and old blood. A lone Dwarf, his eyes glowing faintly in the gloom, hammered a blade against the anvil. The metal did not ring; it whispered, absorbing the shadows of the cavern. He knew the surface world would never understand this craft, nor would they survive the darkness he was weaving into steel. As the ground trembled above, signaling the approach of the Abyss, he finished his work and hid the weapon in a niche only he could find, waiting for a day when the dark sun might rise again.

Reader's Guide

The Dwarfs function as a specialized faction within the broader conflict of Dark Souls, distinct from the Undead or the Gods. Their primary goal was survival and the preservation of their unique smithing arts. They were historically aligned with Gwyndolin's court in Oolacile, providing him with weapons capable of countering the forces of the Abyss. This alliance suggests a deep understanding between the Dwarfs' dark affinity and the Dark Soul. Following the fall of Oolacile, the faction effectively ceased to exist as a cohesive group. Survivors became scattered nomads or hermits, guarding their secrets in remote locations like Darkroot Garden. Their role in the conflict is that of enablers; without Dwarven craftsmanship, the wielders of Dark Sorcery would lack the tools necessary to fight back against the Abyssal corruption.
