As the First Flame began to fade and the Age of Dark approached, Gwyn grew terrified of the unknown darkness that had been hidden away by the Witch of Izalith. In a final act of defiance against destiny, he gathered his remaining forces and marched to the Kiln. There, he sacrificed his soul to relight the flame, linking it to himself in a process known as Linking the Fire. This act saved the world from immediate darkness but also cursed Gwyn with the fading light of the fire, turning him into a Lord of Cinder who could no longer leave the Kiln.

In Their Own Story

The air inside the Kiln is thick with ash and the scent of burning gold. Gwyn stands motionless before the dying embers of the First Flame, his golden armor tarnished by centuries of heat. His eyes, once bright as the sun, are now hollow sockets filled with a desperate, fading light. He does not turn to greet the challenger who arrives; he only raises his sword, the weight of an entire age pressing down upon him. 'The fire must burn,' he whispers, though no sound escapes his lips, only the crackle of the flame consuming his very soul.
