Lore & Background

When the Undead Asylum was eventually sealed and forgotten by the world above, Sif remained in his post, refusing to abandon his duty even as time eroded the land around him. Eventually, he was moved to Darkroot Garden, where he waited for Gwyn's return or a worthy successor to test his mettle. It is said that when the Chosen Undead finally arrived to challenge him, Sif fought not out of malice, but to prove that the guardian's spirit remained unbroken until the very end.

In Their Own Story

The wind howled through the darkened roots of the garden, carrying the scent of decay and old magic. There, amidst the twisted trees, sat a grey wolf of immense stature, his fur matted with dust but his eyes burning with an ancient fire. He did not growl or snarl; he simply watched the path where the Chosen Undead approached. As the warrior drew their blade, Sif rose to his full height, the great sword in his jaws gleaming faintly. With a mournful cry that seemed to echo across ages, he charged, not as a monster, but as a friend testing the worth of one who dared walk where gods once tread.

Reader's Guide

Sif is encountered first as a boss in the Undead Asylum, serving as an early test of skill for the player. This initial fight takes place in a small courtyard where the wolf defends the gate with ferocity. Later in the game, players can find Sif again in Darkroot Garden, this time guarding a bonfire near the entrance to the area. This second encounter is significantly more challenging and serves as a tribute to his enduring loyalty. Upon defeating him, the player receives Sif's Greatsword, a weapon that reflects his immense size and power. The sword is unique for its ability to be wielded with one hand despite its massive frame. Sif's story highlights the themes of loyalty and duty prevalent in Dark Souls, showing how even beasts can possess noble spirits worthy of remembrance.
